"Some say documentary film is storytelling with found objects, but great documentaries are built on much more than luck," says story consultant Dawn Brett-Hauschild. "Like any filmmaker, you need to communicate a clear vision for a compelling story before the camera rolls."
That's why some of Canada's most celebrated documentary film directors and producers partner with Dawn Brett-Hauschild to create films that win awards, such as the Special Jury Award from the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), the Japan Prize for Youth Education, and the Audience Award for World Cinema at the Sundance Film Festival, among many others.
Hoping to level the playing field between established and emerging voices, Dawn also works with first-time documentary filmmakers to create pitches, outlines and films grounded in her teachings of quality research, character development and story structure.
Because a well-crafted story is how today's documentary filmmakers get projects greenlit, build large audiences and encourage empathy for all human beings trying to survive and thrive in this crazy world.
