JOURNALISM:
PRINT, TV, RADIO
& PODCASTING
Marshall McLuhan was right about a lot of things. For one, the Canadian communication theorist who shot to fame in the 60s with the radical idea that "the medium is the message" seems to have predicted our current media landscape eerily well.
Whatever you think about Mcluhan's theories on technological determinism, or specifically "media determinism," we can all agree that, for good or ill, people today are getting their news and information from a wide range of sources on a growing number of influential platforms. Recent studies in 2025 by Reuters and the Pew Research Center suggest it's a dramatic shift away from traditional print and television media towards digital media that can be easily accessed on smartphones and other devices. Social media and video-sharing giants, Facebook and YouTube, followed by Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly known as Twitter), are popular alternatives as society sees the rise of news-related podcasts, influential online creators and the emergence of AI chatbots.
While anyone with access to a few simple tools can create content nowadays, the real difficulty lies in getting heard. That's why Dawn Brett-Hauschild has devoted her career to crafting impactful stories that cut through the cluttered media landscape to educate, inspire and entertain audiences across various platforms.
A classically trained journalist with an honours degree from Carleton University's School of Journalism, Ms. Brett-Hauschild has employed best practices in general news, crime and investigative reporting since beginning her career as a young reporter and feature writer for major news organizations, such as Reuters, BCTV News, the Vancouver Sun, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, among others.
Dawn has also contributed a number of radio documentaries and pieces of creative non-fiction to CBC Radio, and most recently received Creative BC funding to develop a true crime podcast.
